Students compete for scholarships in USF music competition
High school singers, pianists, and orchestra musicians will compete for cash prizes and scholarships next month in the University of St. Francis’ first annual Cecilian Music Scholarship Competition. Music majors enrolling at USF will be eligible for one $5,000 scholarship, two $2,500 scholarships, and two $1,000 scholarships at the competition on Saturday, Feb. 10 at USF’s main campus.
Prizes will be awarded on the basis of talent, musical preparedness and promise of the student performers, according to Patrick Brannon, chair of the university’s Fine Arts department. Winners of a Cecilian music scholarship are also eligible to apply for all other USF scholarships and financial assistance programs, Brannon added.
Auditions are required and applications for auditions will be due Feb. 1, or until the audition schedule is full. Applications are available in high school music departments or guidance offices.
Singers who will audition must prepare two contrasting selections in English or Italian from the classical repertoire or one classical selection and one Broadway Number. Pianists and instrumentalists must prepare two contrasting compositions or movements from the classical repertoire or one classical and one jazz selection. About 32 students are expected to participate.
