USF celebrates the life and legacy of MLK, Jr.
Jim Lucas, acclaimed actor and advocate for
social change, will perform dramatic renditions
of speeches by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in
his one-man show, "Reflections," at
the University of St. Francis on Thursday, Jan.
19 at 7 p.m. in the Moser Performing Arts Center
auditorium. Admission is free.
Lucas has received national recognition for his
stirring and dramatic recitations and interpretive
readings depicting the life and times of Dr. King.
"This community-wide event celebrates the
life and legacy of Dr. King," said Kimberly
Brayboy, director of student development. "Lucas
brings with him a wealth of experience and most
importantly, a true compassion for the life and
works of Dr. King. Our hope is that the USF community
can use this presentation to take action in our
community by following the lead of Dr. King's
teachings," she said.
Lucas is an advocate of Dr. King's philosophy
of non-violent civil action to affect social change.
Like Dr. King, Lucas participated in local protests
and demonstrations in the 60s to achieve school
integration in his hometown of Lake Providence,
La.
His participation in the 20th anniversary of the
March on Washington inspired him to learn and
recite Dr. King's speeches. Since then, Lucas
has traveled across the nation delivering various
renditions of Dr. King's "I Have A Dream,"
"I've Been to the Mountaintop," "A
Knock at Midnight" and excerpts from the
letter from Birmingham Jail in a dramatic one-man
show. His resemblance to and interpretation of
Dr. King has been called "remarkable,"
"awe inspiring," "uncanny"
and "soulful."
