USF to hold prayer service for peace

The University of St. Francis will hold a prayer service for peace on June 30, the day the United States will return governing power to Iraq. The focus of the service will be a prayer for peace for all peoples.

Selections on peace from the Bible and the Koran will be read by Friar Rock Travnikar, USF chaplain, and a leader from the Muslim community, along with the Peace Prayer of St. Francis.

The prayer service is in keeping with the lessons of St. Francis, the university’s patron saint, according to Travnikar. St. Francis traveled to Egypt in 1219 to meet with the sultan leader of Muslim forces, and the two men prayed together for peace.

The prayer service will be at 11 a.m. in the university’s Moser Performing Arts Center auditorium. The University of St. Francis is at 500 Wilcox St. in Joliet. For information about the prayer service, call (815) 740-3404.
