USF professors receive awards

Five University of St. Francis faculty members have received awards to pursue the study of Saints Francis and Clare, the university’s patrons.

Named San Damiano Scholars after the location where Francis began to "rebuild" the church, the five each received $500 from the university, according to Sister Rosemary Small, vice president for Mission and Ministry.

Those who received the award are history professors Jeffrey Chamberlain and Cathleen Schultz, both of Joliet; English professors John Bowers of Joliet and Vin Katilius-Boydstun of Chicago; and philosophy professor Timothy Weldon of Palo Park.

The University of St. Francis, at 500 Wilcox St. in Joliet, serves more than 4,300 students nationwide, including 1,800 at its Joliet campus. More than 60 areas of undergraduate study are offered in the areas of arts and sciences, business, education, nursing and social work. Graduate programs are offered in health care, business and education.

The University of St. Francis was founded in 1920 by the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate, which are sponsors of the university.
