USF’s Schola Cantorum dedicates spring concert to peace

"Dona Nobis Pacem: A Concert for Peace" will be presented by the University of St.. Francis’ student choirs, the Schola Cantorum and Chamber Singers. This 11th annual spring concert will be April 24-25 at the university in Joliet.

The centerpiece of the concert will be Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s 1779 Coronation Mass with student soloists accompanied by the Joliet Sinfonian Chamber Ensemble. A Cameroon processional, a gospel piece and works by Guiseppe Verdi, Orlando di Lasso, Samuel Barber, George Gershwin and Lennon and McCartney will also be performed.

The concert will be presented at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 24 and 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 25 in the university’s Moser Performing Arts Center auditorium. The Thursday afternoon concert is free. Tickets for the Friday evening concert are $8 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. For tickets or information, call (815) 740-3404. Reservations are encouraged, but tickets will be available at the door.

The Schola Cantorum and Chamber Singers are directed by Patrick Brannon, professor of music. Pianist Beverly Holt will accompany the singers.

The Mozart Mass will feature student soloists: soprano Amanda Welsh of Minooka; alto Kathryn Wengelewski of Plainfield; tenor Nathan Edwards of Bolingbrook; and bass Kevin Keller of Decatur. Other student soloists are Amanda DeCamp, Nina Lennon, LaToya Riley, Eleise Rogacki and Ruben Valadez, all from Joliet, and Megan Mullen of Plainfield.

The Schola Cantorum includes Carrie Monaco of Aurora; Michael Roszyk of Bolingbrook; Richard Susner of Crest Hill; Phillip Lee of Frankfort; Jamin Gahm of Freeport; Mary Wollgast of Gardner; LoLisha Dixon, Italy Dorsey, Clare Gawlik, Ellwyn Gulick, Shannon Murphy, Kate Niswonger, Ryan Ruffatti and Maria Zavala of Joliet; Joe Van Der Bosch of Kildeer; Elizabeth Vlahos of Manhattan; Amy Vicich of Marseilles; Tina Middleton and Cindy Onderisin of Morris; Julie Cook and Diedra Duncan of Ottawa; Kevin Leonard of Palos Park; Katherine Phillips of Park Forest; Therese Miller of Plainfield; Joshua Mancuso of Shorewood; Trevor Lynn of Tremont; and Stephanie Whyte of Wilmington.

The University of St. Francis, at 500 Wilcox St., serves more than 4,300 students nationwide, including 1,800 at its Joliet campus. The university offers more than 60 areas of undergraduate study, including arts and sciences, business, education and nursing, along with 10 graduate programs.
