USF offers wellness programs for older adults

Older adults can learn more about health and wellness by attending programs presented by University of St. Francis College of Nursing and Allied Health faculty and students. Programs on a variety of topics of interest to older adults will be presented at locations throughout the community.

The following programs are scheduled:

Cancer Prevention for Older Adults will be presented at Victory Centre of Joliet, 31 N. Broadway, at 1 p.m. on Feb. 10.

HIV/AIDS and the Older Adult will be presented at the Will-Grundy Medical Clinic, 213 E. Cass St. at 10 a.m. on Feb. 15.

Sleep Concerns for the Older Adult will be presented at Senior Services of Will County, 251 N. Center St. at 1:30 p.m. on Feb.15.

Exercise, Physical Activity and Older Adults will be presented at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church (Education Wing), 205 E. Jackson St., at 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 28.

USF nursing students are mentored and educated regarding the latest and best practices in promoting wellness among senior citizens. In turn, they will conduct educational programs for seniors at the above agencies.

"USF is absolutely committed to further enriching the undergraduate and graduate curriculums with geriatric study," said Maria Connolly, dean of the College of Nursing and Allied Health. Connolly added that the nursing faculty of the College of Nursing & Allied Health has designed the nursing program with special emphasis on care of the older adult with courses on healthy aging, theoretical concepts of aging and the clinical management of acute and chronic illnesses in the older adult.
