USF offers business writing seminar

The University of St. Francis is teaming up with the South Suburban Park and Recreational Professional Association to present a business writing seminar to all parks and recreation professionals.

Bonnie J. Covelli, director of Solutions: A Resource Center for Business and Community Partnerships at the University of St. Francis, will present “Effective Communication: An Introduction to Business Writing” on Friday, May 4.

Communication is an essential component in every organization; however, most employees have never had formal training in effective ways to communicate, especially in writing, according to Covelli.  “In today’s fast-paced world, written communication, including e-mails, memos, and letters, are sent quickly across desks, across departments, across organizations, and rarely do employees take a moment to conform to standard writing practices.  In many cases, people write how they speak, and, therefore, they do not always send the written message they had intended,” said Covelli.

This seminar will help outline basic techniques and skills to help employees communicate more effectively in the written form, she explained.

The seminar will teach how to eliminate non-essential components, slang and catch phrases, as well as to recognize “industry terminology” and verbalize it more often in written works.  Participants will learn the difference between direct and indirect language and understand the meanings behind active and passive voice and what is expected.  Extensive instruction on how to write a business letter, memo, fax, e-mail, and a thank you note will be included, as well as instruction on how to write and present a business report to showcase their work.

The Effective Communication: Introduction to Business Writing will be held on Friday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Tinley Park Park District, 8125 W 171st St., Tinley Park.  The cost of the seminar will be $49 for all members of the South Suburban Parks and Recreation Professional Association and $59 for all other attendees.  For questions and to register for the seminar, contact the Channahon Park District at 815.467.7275.  Registration is requested by May 1.
