Fingerprints
Patterns have been noticed on people’s fingers
for many years. In the mid 1600s, Marcello
Malpighi first described the patterns of ridges
and pores on the tips on the fingers, as part of a
study on the human skin.
In 1823, the physiologist Jan Evangelista
Purkinhe described whorls, ellipses and
triangles formed by the lines of the ridges and
grooves on the surface of the skin on the
fingers.
