TASIR Project

Budget Request for Summer 05 Project

Dr. D

Hi Lisa:

Here is a list of water samples, chemicals, equipment, and personnel (lab assistant) that I would need for my portion of the summer TASIR project. As you well see, the activities are heavily experimental with hands-on, quantitative, and investigative in nature.

1. Water Samples

Lisa,

We need to purchase as many different brands of bottled drinking water and tap water (home) for analysis - I need the water samples on the first day of my session. A six pack or a gallon of drinking water is enough to cover the entire testing process. Teachers could bring their own tap water from home.

2. Chemicals

Lisa:

The list of chemical below is available in my lab at USF. We do not need to buy anything now. We could use it and will estimate an approximate cost of replacing it. My estimated cost of replacing the chemicals is:  $500. A check could be written to: USF- Natural Science Department. This will take care of it.

1. EDTA

2. Calibration Solutions, pH 4.00, 7.00 and 10.00

3. Buffer Solution, pH 10

4. Calmagite Indicator

5. Calcium Carbonate

6. Silver Nitrate

7. Potassium Chromate Indicator Solution

8. Hydrochloric Acid

9. Methyl Orange Indicator Solution

3. Equipment

Lisa:

The list of equipment below is available in my lab at USF. We do not need to buy anything now except for the pH Sensors. Use the same list in my academic budget to buy them. You may order them at  (pH Sensor - Item: pH53Mil Model: H53 $74.49 ea - http://www.sciencefaircenter.com/product.tpl?RecordID=SF-COM-10768&cart=1118618823396231

Please order about six units ASAP, I would need them on the first day of my session). The other disposable items we could use from my lab and will estimate an approximate cost of replacing them. My estimated cost is:  $100. A check could be written to: USF- Natural Science Department. This will take care of it.

1. Glass or plastic watch glasses

2. Plastic transfer pipettes

3. pH meters

4. Glass or plastic stirring rods

5. Beakers (25 and 50 mL) and graduated cylinders (25 and 50 mL)

6. Hot plate

7. Balance capable of reading to 0.001g

4. Personnel - Lab Assistant

Lisa:

To help prepare all the solutions, reagents, and indicators for the analysis, as well as clean up after the experiments, a lab assistant is essential. The lab assistant will also be present on the day of the workshop to help manage safety in lab as well as assist teachers. One of our recent graduates, Bettylou Wahl, has been helping me. Please have a check written to her for $160. I will e-mail you her ss#.
