Course Description: "A survey of principles of Organic and Biochemistry, particularly as they relate to health sciences. Areas studied include aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols and ethers, aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and derivatives, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, and enzymes. Required of nursing majors." (1996-98 Catalog). In addition, the following topics will be reviewed: measurements, gases, and solutions.
Rationale and Objective: The course is designed to provide a basic foundation in the field of chemistry for those students interested in pursuing a nursing major. The course will train students to think critically and approach various problems in the field in a quantitative and exact fashion.

1. Chemistry: An Introduction to General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry,
7th ed., media update, Karen C. Timberlake, HarperCollins, 2001.
2. A workbook to accompany the above text.

EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS:
1. Homework assignments will be assigned but not graded. These assignments
are intended to increase the problem solving ability of the students. It
is very important to work out every problem in the study guide. This is
one of the best methods of learning the material. Also, solve the WEBquizzes
mail them to your instructor before taking exams.
2. Attendance is required. A good attendance including the transcription
of a good set of class notes will greatly improve the students' chances
for achieving a satisfactory grade in this course. If you need to miss
a class, please notify me.
3. Five written exams will be given. No make-up exams are allowed unless
a justifiable reason is given. If you need to miss an exam, please notify
me.
4. Academic integrity must be always preserved. Any violation will
be handled according to the guidelines in the Catalog.
5. Final Exam.
6. Breakdown for Grading: Exams are composed of 70% closed book and
30% takehome assignment.
