Teaching

The current courses that I teach are General Chemistry I and II, Biochemisty, and Foundations of Chemistry. I am currently developing two new courses that will be available in the next couple of years: one of these will be a second semester of biochemistry and the other is an analytical biochemsitry course.

General Chemistry I and II

This class is taught in a collaborative style, which means we try to do as little lecturing as possible! The students are divided into groups and work on different problems right after we have discussed the methods for solving these types of problems. We also make having fun a goal in our class. The lab experiements moving toward experiments that are investigations that allow students to explore some of their own ideas!

Biochemistry

This is an upper level course that focuses primarily on funky characteristics of proteins and enzymes, which allow these suckers work in our metabolic pathways. We also look at the other macrocmolecules of which our cells are composed. This course is also taught in a collaborative style that emphasizes class discussions and group problem solving. The lab component of this course is designed to allow students to isolate, purify, and characterize an enzyme.

Foundations of Chemistry

This class is designed to meet the chemistry requirement for our Radiation Therapy and Radiography degrees. It provides a general introduction to inorganic, organic and biochemistry.

Research Interests

I am just beginning to establish research projects for students. My primary interests are in the areas of DNA repair and replication in the chloroplasts of soybean plants.

Things for Fun!

I have always hated those blanks on aplications or various other forms for hobbies! I never know what to put. The ones that come to mind are always so drab and made up! Do people really stamp collect or neddle point? So instead of listing that kind of stuff that I only do on paper, I'm going to list stuff that I like to do to relax or just have fun!
