Joliet Township awarded the University of St. Francis (USF) Joliet Symphony Orchestra (JSO) a grant that will be used in part to fund the ensemble’s 10th season celebration.

The 10th anniversary season is dedicated to “Music on a Mission,” which will engage the community through music performances and volunteerism, said orchestra director Jim Stopher.

The first community service concert is planned for the July 31 Joliet Slammers game when Stopher will throw out a first pitch and the Joliet Symphony Orchestra Brass Quartet will play the National Anthem. For more information about the coming season, visit www.jolietsymphonyorchestra.org.

The $10,000 grant directed by Joliet Township Supervisor Dan Vera was presented to Stopher, USF President Arvid C. Johnson and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Robert Kase by Joliet Township Clerk Beth Ann May.

The funds will be used to purchase music, install a new JSO music library and upgrade instruments and equipment, as well as to fund the symphony’s 10th anniversary season, according to Stopher.

The Joliet Symphony Orchestra at the University of St. Francis was founded in 2005 as a university and community partnership. USF students, as well as musicians in the community perform in JSO. The orchestra practices and performs at the University of St. Francis.

The University of St. Francis serves 3,400 students nationwide, offering undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs in arts and science, business, education, nursing, health care and social work. For information, call (800) 735-7500 or visit www.stfrancis.edu.
