Message from the President

Our hearts are heavy as we contemplate the pain and concern of those
at Northern Illinois University. We are deeply sorry for their loss and
stand with them, strong through prayer as they grieve and begin to
process all that has happened.

At times like these when violence so randomly breaks into our
existence we must rely on one another, and know that through
love and understanding ultimately comes peace.

Our prayer, the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, provides an important
context in times of trial. These words are particularly meaningful now:

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love,
Where there is injury, pardon,
Where there is doubt, faith,
Where there is despair, hope,
Where there is darkness, light,
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may
not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned.
And is it in dying that we are born to eternal life,

The University of St. Francis community gathered in front of Tower Hall
on Monday, Feb. 18 for a candle lighting prayer service. Our greatest
prayer is that our friends at Northern Illinois University will find peace.

Sincerely,

Michael Vinciguerra
President
