USF Psychology Program Description

The Psychology Department at the University of St. Francis offers a general psychology program developed in accordance with the recommended guidelines of the American Psychological Association for undergraduate study. The purpose of the program is to provide a solid foundation for students to pursue advanced studies at graduate schools or to begin work at entry-level positions. The program ensures the core elements as well as the dynamic aspects in the discipline through its well-balanced required and elective courses. Psychology students are to study how psychologists perform inquiries using scientific methods; to understand how the heredity-environment interaction influences people’s cognition, personality, learning, intelligence, emotion, motivation, morality, social relationships, and their developmental changes across the life-span; to learn theories in abnormal psychology, assessment/testing instruments, and psychotherapies to help those in need; and to appreciate the evolutionary course of psychology as a scientific discipline: its history and systems. Psychology students are also encouraged to learn through internship experiences in clinical/human services settings or/and in doing empirical research with faculty. The program also serves students who wish to complement their academic specialization in other major areas of study.
