Personal Counseling
The Personal Counseling Department is a resource for the entire USF family. Individual and marital counseling, consultation regarding personal issues such as anxiety, depression, relationship problems, stress management and other personal issues are available. All services are strictly confidential and information may only be released with your specific written consent.
As with any health need, it is best to seek services at the earliest possible time rather than waiting until a condition becomes more difficult to manage. We recognize that it is difficult to ask for help, but we respect those who take that step. You will be treated
with respect and compassion.
College age students are at a critical transition point in their lives. They are attempting to establish their own identities, autonomy and individual values and beliefs. It is during this time, for some the first time away from home, that personal and interpersonal issues arise that can make daily living as well as academic success very difficult. Issues related to anxiety, panic, depression, identity confusion, independence from parents, relationships with peers and authority, dating, body image and food, are common among students. Services to help students deal with alcohol and drug related problems are also available.
It is our goal to provide needed services within 12 therapy sessions. Exceptions can be made in certain cases. If a student prefers services off campus, we can assist them in finding needed help.
You may call the Counseling Department directly at 740-3598 and request services at any time. If you receive a message and a request to leave a voice mail message, please give the counselor your name and phone number(s) where you can be most easily reached. If you do not want the counselor to leave a message, please indicate that as part of your message. If you prefer not to leave a message on a machine, you can call the Health Services Receptionist at 815-740-3848. The Receptionist will make sure that a counselor gets your message.
If you prefer, you can e-mail the Director of Counseling at (put in Personal Counseling Department email address, not the name of the counseling director).
If you are experiencing an emergency, please contact the Security department at 740-3383. They have the ability to reach a counselor 24 hours a day by means of a beeper system. If you need to talk to a person about a personal issue and you cannot reach anyone through these numbers, call the Crisis Line of Will County at 815-722-3344.
