University Ministry

All students are invited to participate in University Ministry to examine the four components of values education, community building, religious programming and community service and to examine the lives of the university’s patrons, St. Francis of Assisi and St. Clare.

To help students manage the many moral and ethical dilemmas of today’s world, the Center for the Study of Contemporary Ethics has been established at the university. The center helps students handle the challenges of Christian living in the modern world and understand the ethical dimensions of professional life.

All facets of University Ministry are designed to build strong spiritual individuals within the USF student body.

For many USF students, participation in the University Ministry program allows them to strengthen their faith and lead others by example, and, in turn, achieve spiritual and educational goals. University Ministry at the University of St. Francis plays a vital role in creating a spiritual environment for students. Built on the four Franciscan values particular to USF, – Respect, Integrity, Service and Compassion – University Ministry gives students a sense of belonging in the campus community and the world.

The University recognizes the full individuality of each student and seeks to integrate all components of the personality including the intellectual, moral, spiritual, creative, physical and social – into a competent whole person who will continue to grow in wisdom, grace and knowledge.

Serving those in need is a primary function of University Ministry. Students participate with community groups such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Groundwork Shelter, Morningstar Mission, Cornerstone Services, and Cornerstone Services. Through the Service and Outreach Program, mission trips to Nazareth Farm, West Virginia and Bolivia also assist those in need. Popular retreats bring University Ministry participants together to discuss God, Scripture and community. Koinonia, a popular spirituality and community building weekend retreat, has been an integral part of the University Ministry Programs for more than 15 years. Held off campus, it has been described as a "life-changing experience."

Daily and Sunday liturgies, para-liturgical prayer services, Bible study, special-occasion all-school Masses and discussion groups held by University Ministry enrich students’ spiritual lives. Spiritual counseling and catechetical instruction also are available. University Ministry student staff members in the residence halls lead monthly prayer services and small faith group activities on a regular basis. A pastoral counselor also is available to meet with students.
