Departure 2004

The Departure series of mini exhibitions showcases the work of selected University of St. Francis visual arts students. These students have produced a body of work that, in the opinion of the faculty, has matured to the point that public exhibition is warranted. Each year between one and three students will be featured in gallery spaces throughout Joliet.

Departure, the first of a series of traveling mini-exhibitions featuring the work of University of St. Francis student artists, can be seen at the "Art at the Steelworkers Building run by Friends of Community Public Art," from Feb 6-8.

Departure 1 will features the works of seniors Ryan Wolfe of Belleville, Yaniro Paramo of Joliet and Rick Mutz of Crest Hill. All three have worked in video, installation and sculpture, as well as performance, according to Matthew Wilson, professor of visual arts at the University of St. Francis.

"Departures allows art students to have a professional gallery experience while giving the community a sampling of ours artists' work," he added.

Wolfe's work is minimal, formal and witty, often playing with the debatable line between art and the ordinary.

Mutz will present video and installation work that investigates the eternal questions surrounding life, death, and the existence of the soul.

Departures can be seen at the Art at Steelworkers Building, 310 N. Ottawa St. in Joliet. The gallery will be open Friday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, noon to 4 p.m.
