Paul Laprade Joins Choral Directors Association Committee

April 9, 2019 | Joliet, Ill.

University of St. Francis (USF) assistant professor and director of choral activities Paul Laprade, Ph.D. ABD, will join the executive committee of the Illinois-American Choral Directors Association (IL-ACDA) this summer. Laprade currently serves as the association’s chairperson of research and repertory for Illinois colleges and universities.

“It is an honor to join the executive committee of the IL-ACDA, as I was asked to fill this role by some of the finest people in my field at the state level,” Laprade said.

As a member of the IL-ACDA’s executive committee, Laprade will have a role in planning and executing participatory activities and professional development for choral conductors/faculty and students throughout the state. These activities include workshops, two state conferences, a regional conference, and the generation of materials related to communications among members.

According to Laprade, one of the many positives he sees in his new role is an opportunity to bring even more visibility to the University of St. Francis.

“In May, USF will co-host ‘GospelFest,’ an event in which over 100 colleges and high schools will be involved. USF will partner with IL-ACDA through my leadership as the primary organizer and host of this event,” he said.

“In addition, I will be the contact point for many people in Illinois who wish to be engaged in the activities and programs of ACDA. Clearly, my affiliation with USF will be a part of materials distributed throughout the state for choral activities. ACDA, and IL-ACDA by extension in this state, is the largest and most influential organization in my field. USF’s long choral tradition has not previously been linked with this organization; our visibility as an institution with a music program will be increased simply by association.”

Laprade, who is currently in his second year at USF, joined ACDA approximately 20 years ago and has since been inducted as a life-long member. His past service roles with the organization include contributor to its juried publication, the Choral Journal, editor of the “Reviews” section of Choral Journal, choral repertoire and standards chair for two-year colleges in the Midwest region, and national choral repertoire and standards chair for two-year colleges.

According to the organization’s website,, the American Choral Director’s Association, “is a nonprofit music-education organization whose central purpose is to promote excellence in choral music through performance, composition, publication, research, and teaching. In addition, ACDA strives through arts advocacy to elevate choral music’s position in American society.”
