Morayma Barron

University of St. Francis (USF) sophomore business management major, Morayma Barron of Joliet has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship from the Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus Foundation (ILLCF).

The ILLCF awards scholarships to “deserving young people of good character and high academic achievement…to help them achieve their educational objectives.” Applications are received from all over the state with only 25 applicants receiving the $2,000 scholarship.

“I am grateful and proud to have received this scholarship,” says Barron. “I am thankful for every scholarship I receive. I am also proud of myself because I have accomplished and done a significant amount to be able to stand out above the rest.”

Barron heard about the scholarship from Familias Unidas Por La Educacion (Families United through Education), a community group focused on “providing educational resources and support to area families who want their children to get a college education.”

Part of the application process included a letter of recommendation, which was no problem for Barron, who had plenty of USF faculty and administrators to choose from.

“Professor Brown is a good professor and an excellent academic adviser,” says Barron. “All of my business professors have been amazing. They all provide me with great insight and answer my questions thoughtfully. Frankly, that is true about every USF employee I have met; my professors, supervisors and coaches; each of them has been a mentor to me.”

Barron is also a student athlete and maintains two on-campus jobs in addition to her full-time course load. These opportunities, combined with other scholarships awarded, will allow her to graduate debt-free.

“That has always been my goal,” says Barron.
