The University of St. Francis (USF) is proud to announce that the university has been selected as the 2017 recipient of the Presidential Citation Award from the Illinois School Health Association (ISHA). The ISHA promotes the development of coordinated school health programs to enhance the health and well-being of school-aged children and their families.
The university was nominated for this award because of its active role in the education and professional development of health educators across the state. The USF College of Education (COE) consistently provides graduate courses and workshop opportunities for teachers to serve their professional development needs.
“Like students, teachers are lifelong learners,” says William Freeman, director of the Regional Educational Academy for Leadership (REAL) department in the College of Education. “It is important that USF helps to foster new knowledge and teaching strategies to keep educators at the cutting edge of information to enhance the learning of all their students.”
REAL provides graduate credit opportunities for teachers attending the ISHA conference, as well as specific health courses that teachers may elect to take that can lead to a health endorsement.
“Having quality health programs offered in schools today is critical for all children, so they will be able to make good choices as they grow older,” explains Freeman. “Courses such as Drug Education, Mental and Emotional Health in Education, Environmental Health in the Classroom, and others help educators to successfully guide the youth of today through potentially confusing and difficult times.”
This is the third year USF has attended the ISHA conference and the first year offering graduate credit.
“We are honored to be recognized for our efforts as it brings our mission into brighter focus: helping educators perfect their craft to ensure that all students will be successful in school,” said Freeman.
