Leslie Juarez-Resendiz knew right away USF fit her aspirations for college. “At a Visit day during my Junior Year of high school I was able to experience the welcoming environment, which is what first attracted me to the university,” recalls Leslie. After she received her acceptance letter, Leslie and her family were overjoyed to learn that she qualified for several scholarships thanks to her hard work in high school and the assistance USF can offer.

It did not take long for Leslie to dive into her college experience head first. She decided to major in biology with a concentration in pre-veterinary medicine so she could achieve her life long dream of becoming a vet. “I have always been passionate about animals, especially dogs. I love being around any type of species and observing their ways of interaction. It is fascinating how an animal, no matter how big or small, can influence the life around us,” she says.

Despite an already full course load, Leslie is pursuing minors in Chemistry and Spanish as well.

In addition to her daily classes, Leslie has distinguished herself among her peers as a leader in several extra-curricular and academic organizations. She is president of Unidos Vamos A Alcanzar, a Scmitt Scholar, Biology Fellow, Duns Scouts council member, Saints Ambassador and a student worker.

All of these activities enhance Leslie’s professional training and prepare her for a successful future. For example, because of her biology fellowship, she has spent the summer in research labs, which helps her build a resume that will be competitive for veterinary school.

Though she is a proven self-starter, Leslie credits Eric Ruiz, Associate Director for Undergraduate Admissions, for his guidance and inspiration throughout her time at USF. “I am thankful for his dedication towards the students. It is because of him that many of us have made it to college.” Remarks Leslie.

In closing, Leslie is confident about her decision to attend St. Francis “USF is a university where you are an individual, not a number. USF has allowed many of the students to develop as leaders and professionals through the several opportunities it has to offer. “
