The University of St. Francis’ (USF) College of Education will host its annual Reading Engagement and Development (READ) Conference on Saturday, March 2, 2019 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Motherhouse (San Damiano Hall) on the main USF campus located at 500 Wilcox Street in Joliet. READ Conference 2019: Dyslexia and Struggling Readers is open to all community members.
USF’s College of Education is collaborating with Everyone Reading Illinois to focus on dyslexia and struggling readers. Conference attendees will take part in Experience Dyslexia®, a learning disabilities simulation and hands-on workshop that allows participants to experience some of the challenges and frustrations faced by people with this language-based learning disability. During the simulation, participants will rotate through learning stations that model language-related tasks frequently encountered in the classroom and workplace; ultimately providing a thought-provoking activity for educators, parents, or anyone interested in better understanding the lives of individuals with dyslexia.
The conference will also feature a panel discussion addressing dyslexia from the perspective of various experts. Panelists will focus on what dyslexia is not (pervasive myths), what it is (characteristics and how they manifest in the classroom), and what red flags to look for at various ages. The panel will also field questions about early screening, effective intervention methods, advocacy, what to look for in a diagnostic assessment, impact on siblings, and tips for teachers.
The registration fee for READ Conference 2019: Dyslexia and Struggling Readers is $30, which includes light refreshments and professional development clock hours for licensed educators.
