USF Announces Annual Contest for High School Artists

Joliet, Ill. – The University of St. Francis (USF) Art and Design Department has announced its annual high school art exhibition and competition for Illinois high school students. All submitting artists must be attending high school in the 2023-2024 academic year and must be residents of Illinois. The exhibition will run from January 13-25, 2024, and will open with an awards reception on January 13 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the USF Art Gallery (25 E. Van Buren St., Joliet, 60432).

One grand prize will be awarded to an eligible high school senior in the form of a University of St. Francis Art & Design Scholarship, worth $10,000 (see additional details at stfrancis.edu/artgallery. Best of show awards and honorable mentions will be awarded (in the form of Visa gift cards) in the following categories: Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Drawing/Works on Paper, Digital/Other. Winners will be announced at the reception on January 13, 2024. Students must claim their prizes in person at the USF Art Gallery.

The University of St. Francis Art & Design Scholarship is a 4-year renewable scholarship awarded to one student entering a qualified program in the Art & Design Department at USF in the 2024-25 academic year worth a total of $10,000. The Talent Scholarship is stackable with other scholarship/grant awards at the University of St. Francis. To be eligible for the $10,000 Grand Prize Scholarship, students must be seniors (2024) and will be required to upload a digital portfolio (5-10 works) and a one-page statement explaining why they would like to major in art at USF.

Roger Carlson: INNOCENT DAWN Opens at USF Art Gallery

Joliet, Ill. – The University of St. Francis (USF) Art Gallery presents Roger Carlson: INNOCENT DAWN, which will run from October 25 through November 30. In his series, INNOCENT DAWN, Carlson attempts to use imagery and words to create a visual understanding of eternity and an afterlife.

About Roger Carlson

Artist Roger Carlson ‘06, combines both traditional and digital media to create reverse paintings on plexiglass. Carlson’s technique begins with creating digital artwork. The digital works are then painted using a reverse painting technique in which the image is painted on plexiglass using acrylic paint, spray paint, paint marker and ink.

Paul Erschen: LEACH FIELD Opens at USF Art Gallery

Joliet, Ill. – The University of St. Francis (USF) Art Gallery presents Paul Erschen: LEACH FIELD, which will run from August 24 through October 6. Paul Erschen: LEACH FIELD presents painting, sculpture, and prints informed by midwestern post-industrial and agricultural environments.

About Paul Erschen

Born in 1975, in Aurora, Ill., Paul Erschen lives and works in Chicago, Ill. Erschen earned a BFA in Painting & Drawing from Northern Illinois University (1998) and an MFA in Painting & Drawing from The Ohio State University (2000). Paul has taught in the Art & Design Department at the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Ill., since 2001 and is currently a Professor of Visual Art and Art & Design Department Chair.

2023 USF Student Art Exhibition Open to the Public

Joliet, Ill. – The University of St. Francis (USF) Art & Design Department recently held its 2023 exhibition and competition. The annual competition is open to all USF students from any major. All students were eligible to receive all prizes regardless of major, with the exception of the Coleman Scholarship, which is awarded to an Art major.

The exhibition is open to the public from now through April 13, 2023, during regular USF Art Gallery hours, which are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (with the exception of holidays and University breaks). The USF Art Gallery is located at 25 E. Van Buren Street (on the corner of Van Buren Street & Scott Street).

The results from the competition include:

USF Art Gallery Announces Exhibition from Artist Sherri Denault

Joliet, Ill. – The University of St. Francis (USF) Art Gallery in downtown Joliet invites the community to the exhibit Sherri Denault: From a Whirlwind, which runs now through March 22, 2022. Through this immersive installation, artist Sherri Denault creates patterns and textures that often resemble something found in nature – the flow of a stream or the wind rustling through leaves. Gallery visitors will be greeted with embellishments of thread, stitching and knots that becomes an immersive sensory experience for the viewer allowing them to question what lies just below the surface of perception.
